04 Nov What Do Electricians Do?
Electricians are an essential profession in cities around the world. Yet, for the casual layman or homeowner, the role of electrician may not be completely understood. In order to bring greater clarity on the role of electricians as well as the type of work they can be engaged to perform, we have written this article. In it, we shall discuss the types of electrician jobs, responsibilities, qualifications and tools used.
A Broad Overview of Electricians
Long story short, electricians are engaged to install all wiring works that brings electrical power from the power grid to your building. After which, they can also be assigned to maintain the wiring on a regular basis. In doing so, they have to abide by safety rules and regulations to ensure that your building continues to have electricity without danger being posed to them or residents. Furthermore, where possible, works should be done with minimal disturbance to everyday activities.
4 broad types of electrical jobs exist, including:
As indicated in the name, residential wiremen help to install and maintain any electrical wires that enter our homes. Their expertise lies in quickly setting up simple electrical circuitry in homes rather than in extensively large commercial buildings.
Conversely, inside wiremen help to place and maintain the electrical wires that are used in larger structures or buildings. This commonly includes office buildings, factories, airports and schools. In these projects, strategic mass wiring systems are highly valuable in order to deliver power to all areas without over complication.
As you probably would have noticed, your communication and network cables are different from the typical electrical wiring in your home. This is because they are on a different grid altogether, with the communication grid powering your phone and local area network. In order for your home to receive such communication infrastructure, telecommunication electricians are engaged to have their wiring installed.
Having already covered the various wiring works in your home and office, it is now time to turn our attention to the power grid in your city. Outside linemen are needed to setup the cables that deliver electricity from the power plant to your building. While they are not engaged by individuals such as yourself, they can often be seen performing works on public power lines alongside roads.
General Electrician Responsibilities
The following tasks are carried out by electricians, with adaptations depending on the type of project or work at hand.
- Reading blueprints to determine where circuits, panel boards, outlets as well as all electrical components are placed
- Planning the layout before installing the wiring throughout an entire home, building, facility or city
- Installing electrical systems that make up the infrastructure of the building such as security alarms, fire alarms, telephones and fibre optic cabling as well as LED light installation
- Maintain or replacing aging or faulty circuit breakers, fuses, power sockets and wires
Installation & Maintenance
The general task segments of electrical wiring installation and maintenance are quite different. In general, more strategic planning and documenting is required during the installation phase. Meanwhile, maintenance requires precise work to spot potential hazards and to solve them without causing inconvenience to the residents.
These roles do vary greatly depending on the work area. For example, factory wiremen require greater expertise in working with more complex machinery such as generators, transformers, production line machinery and motors.
Emergency Electrician Services
At times grouped together with maintenance works, emergency electrical services are essential for fixing defects in your home’s circuit. For example, worn out wires with poor insulation pose the possibility of short circuits which when left unmanaged, can lead to electrical fires. Needless to say, an electrical fire in your home poses a severe threat to your property and the lives of everyone in it.
As such, it is important that you learn to recognise the early signs of failing circuit systems in your home. Better yet, engage regular electrical maintenance services to keep your home’s circuits in good shape.
Electricians use a variety of tools depending on the job at hand. A common set would include:
- Knives, hacksaws, pliers, wire-strippers and conduit benders in order to cut or shape wires
- Ammeters to measure electrical current in a circuit
- Ohmmeters to measure electrical resistance in a circuit
- Voltmeters to measure voltage in a circuit
- Oscilloscopes to help graph out how voltage rises and falls over a period of time
With these tools, electricians are able to take readings from the circuit to determine faults before fixing or replacing any existing wiring systems.
Most electricians attend apprenticeship programs as part of their on-the-job training during their studies or at the start of their career. During this program, they receive comprehensive training that qualifies them for both installation and maintenance works. Depending on the country’s regulations, the apprenticeship could last around 4 years, including both vocational classroom instruction and on-the-job training.
In vocational courses, apprentices learn about electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics and electrical code requirements. In addition, they might also opt into more niche training in soldering, telecommunications, fire alarm setup or specialised machinery such as cranes and elevators.
Outside of the classroom, apprentices work under the supervision of qualified and experienced electricians. Common early tasks include drilling holes, setting anchors and attaching conduits. Later, they would proceed to measure, fabricate, install conduits while also testing wiring, outlets and switches.
Once the apprenticeship program has been completed, apprentices have to undergo licensing certifications in order to be fully certified to work independently.
