CAT 3 Cable
CAT3 standard cables are mostly used in homes and offices from the 90s. It can handle data speeds of up to 10Mbps (speed equivalent to 1 hour to download 4.5GB of data). It is less commonly used in wired networking after the development of more efficient cables.
CAT 5 Cable
CAT5 is an Ethernet cable for LAN networking created in the 2000s. It consists of 2 pairs of copper wires. Like the CAT3 cable, the CAT5 cable is also less commonly used nowadays.
CAT 5e Cable
The CAT5e cable uses four pairs of copper wire that are twisted more tightly and consist of heavy-duty shielding to minimise the unwanted transfer of signals. They can handle up to 1Gbps (1 hour to download 450GB of data). It is currently the most commonly used cable for Ethernet in homes and offices.
CAT 6 Cable
CAT6 has even better insulation compared to CAT5e cables. Thus, crosstalk is significantly reduced, allowing better efficiency.
